Agentic preferences: a foundation for nudging when preferences are endogenous

چکیده

Abstract Since the publication of seminal book Nudge by Thaler and Sunstein, several critics have highlighted preference endogeneity as a serious obstacle to nudging. When individuals hold preferences that are dynamic endogenous nudge frame, it is unclear what normative benchmark for libertarian paternalistic policies should be. While acknowledging this issue, pro-nudging camp has not yet sufficiently addressed it. This article aims fill void presenting conditional defence nudging when endogenous. We explain learning process through which establish ‘agentic’ preferences: stable, reasonable, autonomous associated with organismic well-being ground ‘welfare’ principle paternalism. To describe process, we draw on theories from psychological science, in particular self-discrepancy theory self-determination theory. argue agentic only welfare-relevant thus appropriate paternalism but can also be identified choice architects.

Rationalization of choice when preferences are vague

In this paper, we discuss the decision situation where the (vague) preferences are represented by fuzzy relations. There are two ways to interpret this situation: (i) an individual decision maker chooses perfect rankings from a set and uses that combination of rankings as her/his preference ranking. (ii) or a group of decision makers are reporting perfect rankings but their group decision is a ...

Competitive Equilibrium when Preferences

We show the existence of a competitive equilibrium in an economy with many consumers whose preferences may change over time. The demand correspondence of an individual consumer is determined by the set of subgameperfect equilibrium outcomes in his or her intrapersonal game. For additively separable preferences with continuous period utility functions that are unbounded above, this demand corres...

Risk Preferences Are Not Time Preferences: Reply

Can the well-known experimental phenomenon of present-bias in intertemporal choice be confounded with the risks associated with receiving payment? Can measurements of risk preferences be used to represent desires for smoothness in intertemporal payments? In our two 2012 papers in this journal we explored these two questions and found the answer to the first to be yes and the second to be no. We...

Risk Preferences Are Not Time Preferences

Risk and time are intertwined. The present is known while the future is inherently risky. This is problematic when studying time preferences since uncontrolled risk can generate apparently present-biased behavior. We systematically manipulate risk in an intertemporal choice experiment. Discounted expected utility performs well with risk, but when certainty is added common ratio predictions fail...

Endogenous scheduling preferences and congestion

We seek to better understand the scheduling of activities in time through a dynamic model of commuting with congestion, in which workers care solely about leisure and consumption. Implicit preferences for the timing of the commute form endogenously due to concave preferences and temporal agglomeration economies. Equilibrium exists uniquely and is indistinguishable from that of a generalized ver...
